As we all know, retailers are offering more frequent sales than ever, but are those discounts truly a deal if they don’t add value to your wardrobe? It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of a sale, but to make the most of these opportunities, you need a game plan.
Key Questions to Ask Before You Buy
When you’re drawn to a sale item, take a step back and ask yourself:
Am I buying it because it’s cheap? The price tag can be tempting, but don’t let the discount dictate your purchase. Instead, ask yourself if you genuinely need the item or if it will simply add clutter to your wardrobe.
Will I wear it multiple ways? Versatility is key. Can this piece work across different outfits and occasions? If it can only be worn once, it's probably not worth the spend.
Does it align with my style? Stay true to your personal style. If the item doesn’t fit with your current wardrobe or your style evolution, you’ll likely regret the purchase later.
In my recent Nude Lucy haul, I followed these exact principles. I knew the pieces I was purchasing filled gaps in my wardrobe, and I had been eyeing them for a while. I didn’t buy them because they were on sale—I bought them because they were the right additions to my style. I chose these items because I knew they'd elevate countless outfits.
Avoid Impulse Buying Online
Another major factor in sale shopping is knowing where and how to purchase. For example, with the pieces I bought, I knew returns weren’t an option if I shopped online. So, instead of risking the wrong fit, I took the time to visit the store and try them on.
Fit is crucial. As someone who’s 156cm and typically wears size 8-10, I had to make sure I got the right size (XXS in the beige, XS/S in the black), especially when buying timeless pieces like coats. This saved me the hassle of dealing with items that would end up being donated or resold because they didn’t fit properly.
Avoiding the ‘Sale Trap’
I also avoided browsing other stores because it’s so easy to fall into the "sale trap"—where you buy items simply because they’re cheap. I watched countless people walk out with pieces that didn’t suit them, and I know this will lead to frustration later. Don’t let that happen to you!
How to Capitalise on Sales
Identify gaps in your wardrobe before heading to the sales. What pieces have you been missing when getting dressed?
Create a list of those gaps and stick to it while shopping. Don’t be distracted by the flashy discounts if the item doesn’t meet your criteria.
Invest in timeless pieces that will serve your style for years to come, rather than trend-driven items you might only wear a few times.
Know your measurements and ensure the piece will fit well, especially if shopping online where returns aren’t always an option.
